Analyzing a Portfolio of LEED Projects to Shape Sustainable Development Programs—Presentation

Originally presented at the 2006 Greening the Heartland Conference, Vidhi Agarwal presented the findings of the City of Seattle's data "mining" of its LEED® rated buildings applications.

Seattle is one of the nation’s leaders in the number of LEED® rated buildings constructed within its city limits. To better understand the impact of sustainable features of LEED buildings on the city infrastructure and resources, the City of Seattle initiated a study of the LEED credits achieved for the first 15 LEED rated buildings within the city limits.  A study “mined” these buildings’ LEED applications to develop profiles of the water, energy and solid waste measures they incorporated. The analysis enumerates the measures used to achieve LEED credits, illustrates successful market penetration of specific strategies and identifies opportunities lost. The study’s results provide useful insights into the existing state of sustainable design practices and were used to shape future City programs.
